Earth's eye

"A lake is the landscape’s most beautiful and expressive feature. It is earth’s eye; looking into which the beholder measures the depth of his own nature. The fluviatile trees next the shore are the slender eyelashes which fringe it, and the wooded hills and cliffs around are its overhanging brows."

~ Henry David Thoreau

Detroit Lake and Lake Billy Chinook

Another pictorial example of the climate/landscape differences in Oregon. Detroit Lake is in the wet, western part of Oregon, Lake Billy Chinook is located in the High Desert of Central Oregon.

I agree totally with the quote and the two pictures support the argument very well.

Excellent post.

In fact, looking at both pictures again, I fancy a swim in the lake on the right, although the water might prove a bit too cold for me.

Funny to see the difference. We have a city here, Antalya, wich is on the South coast. In winter time it is hot enough to swim in the sea, but in the mountains, just a few miles away you can ski!
