Oh good...

Recycling #5 plastic damn near seemed impossible...until now.

Preserve's Gimme 5 program allows you to ship back clean #5 plastic. Click here for details

I love this. I've been so frustrated with throwing out non-#1 and 2 plastics for years. At least there's a recycling destination for #5s now.

This is fabulous. Now only if there was the same for 4, 6, 7, etc. My city only takes 1, 2, 3 and the incinerator takes care of the rest. I feel like each time I put plastic in the trash, I'm taking a minute off my life. It's pretty sickening...

I'd be curious to know whether the cost of shipping (in terms of human and oil resources) outweigh the cost of dumping. Sometimes we cause more problems by trying to do the right thing. I struggle with this in my business: Shipping something that was shipped from Afghanistan and then shipped to the wholesaler who then shipped it to me and then I ship it to Australia. Maybe it's a $5 textile and it's been around the world, causing pollution.

I wish there were more ways we could think of to use these plastics locally, or to buy in bulk, similar to many health food stores (bring in your own peanut butter jar to fill...). But, that's a long way away. Craft projects! ...

Recycling stays an issue, still way to less is used again. But I think it should more start with the horrible packaging they are making, so that there will be less to recycle to start with.

I can't believe you have different numbered plastics! We all have one big recycling bin where we put ALL plastics, cardboard & glass. It's all sorted out at the other end. Phew! The other end being wherever the big recycling truck delivers it to :)

Outstanding!!!!! We are able to do so here and most times that type of container like in your picture becomes something to hold glaze or paint for me so it is recycled anyway but to know that a program is in place to ensure they can be recycled across the country is just fantastic. Love to hear this type of thing, the efforts are all so worth it with every little step we make forward. Thanks for sharing this, I might use the effort in an OM article :)

Oh that's great! I wish we had that up here! Our weekly garbage is pretty much only unrecyclable plastic & styro... it's quite difficult to shop without buying it! :(
