Efforts on global warming chilled by economic woes

By DINA CAPPIELLO, Associated Press Writer

"...As the economic crisis has spread to markets across the globe, work to curb greenhouse gases elsewhere has stalled.

Earlier this past week, Rajendra Pachauri, head of the U.N. climate panel, said discussions about global warming solutions were "on the back burner." Pachauri shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with former Vice President Al Gore for their work on climate change.

"I'm absolutely sure that climate change will be the last thing people will think about at this point in time," he said. "Sooner or later, they will come back to it."

One of the saddest things about our culture is our inability to focus on two or more things at a time. When will we *collectively* realize that everything is intertwined?

I could not agree more with cicada here. Everything we do effects everything else we do. Coming back to it later will be too late, we need to do something about this now in order to solve the problem before it gets worse.

I am a member of the We org and they sent this video out a week or so ago because it was supposed to be a commercial televised during the 2nd Presidential debate but the networks refused to air it. I do recall however seeing about 5 commercials for Exxon Mobil and others like "clean coal". When will they learn that those efforts are not the answer? only when enough of us say we have had enough.

Great post, thanks for sharing it.

I see the full moon has kicked your worry-meter up a notch too...I'm at a complete loss. Thanks for sharing this. In defense (for lack of a better word) of those who think this is a matter we can 'get around to'-I think the sheer magnitude of the issues we face as inhabitants of this country and the planet itself has reached epic proportion...tip toeing around the elephant in the room might very well be our ONLY option.

I am so sad that we keep taking 1 step forward, and 3 steps back. I want to shake these people in charge. What is the matter with them!?! I still mourn the fact that Al Gore wasn't allowed to take what I consider his rightful place as President. What a different, cleaner, healthier, economically sound and peaceful world I think we would be now living in. I fear that we are fast approaching the point of no return, and that the hole we find ourselves in will be just to deep to climb out of.

Jenn,
I'm a member of WE, too. I still can't believe ABC won't air this ad. Incredible.

Victoria,
Wouldn't America and the world (no Iraq war) be a different place if Gore would have been able to take his rightful place as president? On the bright side, he has been able to focus on the climate crisis and work on getting it the attention it deserves. (an uphill battle) I was very happy when he was awarded the Nobel prize.

Michelle,
You'd think the politicians would be able to focus on more than the current economy, when this will affect the future economy. Multi-task!

Yes it would be great if politicians could mult-task! You'd think it would be a standard requirement, but no!

On with what Michelle said, we NEED to COLLECTIVELY focus on this issue or it isn't going to go away.

I'd posted last week about Google investing $4.4 TRILLION in finding ways for North Americans to become less oil dependent and ways to slow Global Warming.

Those who don't believe? Well I'm sure it will bite them in the ass eventually!

I think I might be the only one who noticed this, but as I was reading the ad, I could not help but think that US referred to U.S. as in USA. Funny, ain't it?

I agree with everybody's feelings here on the forum and what's more, it infuriates me that it's a former Nobel winner who is spearheading this campaign of neglection. 'Sooner or later'? Please, give me a break!

Greetings from London.
