I was in Portland last weekend visiting friends and family. Spent Saturday afternoon being a good consumer: eating and shopping in local establishments.

Powell's Books is the largest independent bookstore in the world...a wonderful place to spend hours perusing new and used books.
Portland is Oregon's largest city and is known for being green...according to Popular Science, it is America's top green city."Half its power comes from renewable sources, a quarter of the workforce commutes by bike, carpool or public transportation, and it has 35 buildings certified by the U.S. Green Building Council.”

I love car shots. My husband makes fun of me for taking so many, but they capture exactly what you see on the road trip.

I drove through Portland just once and was instantly giddy with anticipation, wanting to explore more. I've always vowed to return, but alas have been unable. Someday!

We in Boston are very jealous of Portland's eco number one-ness but at the same time applaud it for being so progressive :) Even though it is "green" I think I noticed a few red leaves in there signifying the start of fall in your area as well huh? Looks & sounds like you had so much fun!

Ever since I stepped foot in Powell's I have been trying to scheme a way to move into some little broom closet and live out the rest of my days hiding from the people who work there. I freakin love that store. And yeah, Portland rocks. I'm glad you got to get out and enjoy civilization! You'll be sending me an email soon, asking me WTF is going on, I promise to write you back when you do. :)

There is nothing like Powell's here. Lots of small & huge wonderful book shops but sadly few offer English books. So we stocked up from our travels.

Portland is a great city and it's easy to take for granted living here.
And Powell's...ah, what can I say? There is no such thing as a 'quick trip' to Powell's.

Portland was one of the cities I thought of relocating to from Chicago, precisely because of all the green initiatives there. But, I really wanted a warmer climate, so I came South.
