Trends vs. Style

Currently, contemporary is in, and it is ever so apparent in consumer marketing.

That's why I was thrilled to find this image from Elle Decoration. Hurrah! A vintage inspired layout. Most of the Home Dec magazines have been following the market trends...everything is contemporary. Kudos to the French who always know style.

Vintage inspired decor...I love it!

Ah, but classic style was once a trend, too! And what's new isn't really "new" half the time.

Personally, I like a mix of both new and old. I like ingenuity and flair no matter what the era. But it is true, the French seem to have a pretty healthy perspective on style.

Those cool French folk. They rock in the cuisine department too! All that fatty, creamy, buttery goodness. Mmmmmm! And coffee being served in bowls. Bowls! BIG bowls! Big bowls of coffee! ...oh I veered totally off topic. Sorry!

What's old is new, what's new is old. I love it all!

The contemporary style of today is actually just mid-century modern from yesteryear. Without the fantastic feel.

I love vintage design, but I do have to admit I'm a little more partial to the real mid-century modern designs.

I don't like that boxy contemporary look at all. So much of it looks empty and quickly made. Everything I have is from thrift stores or given by friends and I love it that way!

Me too!

What I find most cool about that design is the fact that while I am primarily attracted to the clean, modern look, I would still have that in my home in a second! The loft bed and chair have a retro-mod feel but classic vintage like the ladder and desk/chair soften what could be a very harsh space. Great find!

Can we have French-Contemporary? Sometimes I like clean lines and simple paterns, but sometimes I like soft and fluffy... lol.

I'm finding my style lately to be a blend of both. ♥
Great post!

I love a bit of both, and mixing and matching the two styles is a great way to go, I think.

To me the new contemporary is truly a renewal of vintage mid-century. I love the clean lines of the contemporary, and I equally love the warmth, intrigue and coziness of the french style!

I'm not so much into contemporary...it just doesn't look comfortable, or very nice to look at...in my opinion!

i want to say that statement at the top under your header about comments on our blogs is wonderful. i love how it gives honor to the relationship between the commenter as well as the blogger. and i am relieved that vintage inspired design is still to be found. i remember when we remodeled our bathroom i couldn't understand why there were more flooring choices until the store owner said "this is the style." and there was little else!

What's the different between contemporary and modern? I am never quite sure.

I love in the French decor image the focus is on comfort AND clean lines and simplicity. It looks very livable! In fact I want to curl up on that chair right now...

yeah. i've been hearing "contemporary" a lot lately. being one who's usually out the loop of what's in, i just sorta pick up on the trends as i hear words blowing through the wind here and there...

i like that bed in the fist pic.

I am a contemporary girl who likes to bring in the old and combine it with the new. I mean, hello, ABSTRACT ART!!! But I think you have great style, Charmaine.

I have NEVER seen a bunk bed look so desirable and classy.

I hated my bunk bed when I was younger, when you're tired, you just want to drop off to sleep, not climb a ladder!

That zebra is a little frightening to me, but I LOVE everything else about that space! Especially the chair.
