Someday vacations

Someday I'm going to visit America's famous places...

The Grand Canyon is one of the places I dream of...
all the rock cliffs,
desert plants,Ancient structures-the Nankoweap granaries for grain, corn & seed date from AD 1100. The Puebloan peoples protected their food from rodents in these spaces high up in the cliffs.
Fossils-A nautiloid (squid- like creatures with many tentacles) from the Paleozoic period.

waterfalls,
all this scenery awaits...
just a raft trip away.

I really like the idea of floating the river through the Grand Canyon just like my cousin Heidi did in September. These are all her photos. She was with a group of 16 people who rafted and camped...a two week trip.

But, let's face it, I'm a princess
I like the idea of staying in these cabins rather than pitching a tent. There are a group of cabins at Phantom Ranch which is accessible after a 9-10 mile hike along the Bright Angel Trail. It's 4400' down (and then, of course, up). One could rent a mule...
I'd rather be transported.
Hmmm....for now, a virtual Grand Canyon trip will have to do. Maybe I'll turn into an outdoors woman in the near future...

You have such a taste for dramatic landscape.I was at the Grand Canyon in 1977!
In those days you could fly inside the canyon.
Our friend Michael, who had got his drivers license the week before (!) had flown us there.
R. and Michael flew all around under the rim. Most eco -unfriendly .......
I went back to LA on a Greyhound Bus.......

Those photos really set off my imagination, thanks for sharing them. I'd love to see the places in person, though I think I too might have to wait for transporter travel... ;)

I like the thought of being a true outdoors woman, but I am just not. Transporting is a great idea!

The Grand Canyon is is on my list of things I wish to see, too. And that cabin looks dreamy! It would be lovely to pack a very small bag, some cameras, a sketch book, journal and a good read and just escape into the beauty of such a place.

i like to *think* that i could stick it out in a tent. when it comes down to it, though, i'd likely be seeking the nearest cabin.

the grand canyon is on my list of places to go as well. such magnificence.

Can you believe I am in AZ and have never been?! Much of it has to do with the outdoors part of it. No taxi, no electricity generally equals no deal for me. It is breathtaking though...

Just lovely, I needed some beauty today. I was there in the 1970's and actually took a burro ride down the South rim. Ah, youth.

Girl I am so going to be next to you waving goodbye to everyone in hiking boots while we make plans to go for tea at that fun cafe in town...the one that is close to a real bed and a real shower. Yeah, camping is so not in my future either but the photos are always amazing! Heidi snapped some serious winners here! Thanks for the virtual trip, it was a fun time and totally bug free :)

I hope you get to see the Grand Canyon as it's really unbelievable. As far as backpacking down to the bottom, those days are long gone for me! I'm right there with ya with the transporter! LOL

Gorgeous photo choices! I do think they take helicopters (or donekys at least) down to phantom ranch--but then everyone else would sneer at you.
