We interrupt the regular blog posts for this Public Service Announcement:
Homonym - hom·onym
noun
1. Words with the same sound but different spelling.
A lot of blog posts have been referring to holiday decorating, specifically the mantel. Sadly, 90% of the time it is being spelled mantle.
Mantel - man·tel
noun
1. The finish around, or shelf above a fireplace.
Mantle - man·tle
noun
1. A sleeveless garment worn over clothes; a cloak.
And now back to your regular program...

Seriously?? I thought a mantel was a musical instrument!!
JOY!
*Cracking up* Lucky for me, the stockings are hung from the drawer pulls of the sofa table! :D No mantel, no worries...
Thank you. This kind of thing always irritates the bejesus out of me. Glad to see i'm not the only one.
It's not something I've noticed but I at least know that I've not made the mistake. I haven't typed either mantel, or mantle for...ummm...actually I think this may be the first time I've typed either! I don't have a very large vocabulary...
Oh boy...I'm sure we could have a whole blog filled with ridiculous misuses of the English language...and actually, the sentence that I just wrote might be eligible for the first entry! : P
It's a good thing someone around here knows how to spell. I think that skill left about 5 minutes after I graduated from college. Awful!
Uh oh..I am wearing mine...hehehe. Geeze... I depend on spellcheck too much!
he he!
(i'd be one of those who'd have to go to the dictionary in order to use the correct spelling.)
