White House designer

Michael S. Smith, an Interior Designer from California, has been chosen by Michelle Obama to design their White House quarters.

His first job will be designing the First Daughters' bedrooms.

Malia Obama has said she intends to use Abraham Lincoln's desk while doing her homework...(just imagine this...what inspiration!)

Photo from White House Museum

I wonder if Smith will include the desk in his design for her room...

Wow...I can't even imagine being allowed to touch the desk. What a great post.

How fun would it be to chose a famous designer to "do" your place! I like his style. And I can't imagine even sitting at Lincoln's desk, much less doing my work there. Wow.

What!?! I'm outraged! What on earth were they thinking!?! They should have chosen YOU as the designer!

:D

I wonder what the Whitehouse would look like if you or I decorated it...I'm sure they'd throw me out fer sure...where's the outhouse!!!?

It wouldn't be pretentious, that's for sure!

Wow - what an amazing (and daunting) task to have! I think you should do a series on how you'd decorate it! :D

Don't you just love the clean, crisp lines in the last photograph? The simplistic colors? My favorite in that photograph is the monochromatic mural on the wall. Great ispiration for my master.

PS: Obama must have very refined children, b/c all I can think is that if my children were living in the White House, they'd be coined as Weapons of Mass Destruction: They'd have Abe Lincoln's desk scratched, colored on, and broken in less than three days. I guarantee it.

Allie...hello again.

I live in a house full of antiques (although, admittedly, none owned by previous presidents). For the most part they are extremely well made and I would say childproof.

I'm with you, Diva. Good antiques will stand the test of time. I applaud this gentleman's talent, but to me, his rooms don't look like anyone "lives" there.

DDiva, thank you for taking the time to read my blog - I started to follow yours today, after finding you on someone else's site - I know I will devour yours at leisure very soon - The pictures, writing, quotes and your photography are lovely.

GW....I tend to agree with you. I hope he'll tone it down for the girls' rooms.

Oh wow, talk about a high pressure job! How much fun will he have designing for them though? Can not wait to see the results.

I absolutely love the look in the last photo of this post. The mural on the wall is so restful, and the lines are so clean. Of course, if I lived there, there'd be clothes draped all over the chair!

A child using such a desk- I don't know- I would have doodled and carved it to shreds- but there you go - I have an IQ of 10 and Milia is off the charts!Abe was the man! He is actually in my family tree-his mother's side- Nancy- there are milions of us including Tom Hanks...They don't know about me- the blackest of sheep!
Those pillows? Annoying!

Linda Sue-how cool that you're related to ol' Abe! Way back in my family tree (my father's side) is Daniel Boone. Our claim to fame!

Incredible for Malia Obama to say she intends to use Abraham Lincoln's desk. Almost as if she is used to that kind of life...I guess youth adapts easily.

Wow, big job, and the whole world watching. (If I were given this task, I would want to HIDE under Old Abe's desk!) Hope they keep it personal, inviting and warm. I think they will.

Do we get a sneak preview of what the rooms will look like? Thanks for this lovely post.

Greetings from London.

Well, since we are talking about relations, my direct ggggggrandfather, an Ashford, sold land to George Washington which was/is part of the Mount Vernon Estate. Then there are those other relatives that came on the Arc and the Dove who got publically beat as punishment...yikes.

Seriously though (not that I wasnt serious above) I love the mural in the last room. I have contemplated painting a mural in either my living room, front entry or bedroom for a while. The last photo is oh so very inspirational. Now I must decide how to thin the paint to give the scene a sense of depth...with water?

Keep up the exceptional posts.
