The ruins

Bologna - my first day in Italy, bus from airport to downtown where we would later take the train to Florence. A long journey, 21 hours of travel at this point. We left my luggage at the train station and spent a couple hours walking around Bologna. The ruins caught my eye. I always seem to prefer the slightly decrepit. This is one of my first photos...

Rome, second to last day of my Italian journey.
Again, the ruins fascinate me.

Especially these fallen chunks....

I adore a ruin too - especially the Forum in Rome, xv.

Those four balls near the crypt (?) in the first picture are fascinating. Symbolic of something or maybe sometimes a ball is just a ball...

A note to Golden West... Those large balls are not symbolic but were used for warfare in medieval times. They were stone cannon balls. Friends of ours, who live in Mugnano had some of those in their garden. Those are HUGE for cannon balls, so they must have had a very big army to fight!
Ciao, Donna

I love ruins...like in Angkor Wat, it's like walking into a piece of history and wondering what happens hundreds of years ago.

Reminds me of a lot of places I stopped to take photos in Ireland. Europe is so cool with its ancient ruins...they were falling down before our country was even a glimmer on the flat map! Beautiful shots.
