Sod Removal 101

1. Get yourself a BIG tractor (we borrowed Uncle Jim's...thanks!)

2. Hire cute tractor driver (Mark, of course)

3. Start scalping sod, keeping fingers crossed that the sprinkler system won't get damaged, (yeah...busted one pipe) then load (extremely heavy pieces of sod) onto trailer.
4. Make sure you do this on the windiest day of the year to complete the feeling of being transported to the 1930's Dust Bowl.

5. Hire a smart foreman to oversee the job.

Sod? That's a word I've only ever heard used when people tell me to "sod off" so I'm not sure what you're referring to. Dirt I guess...or lawn...or both...

Hey I love that last photo. How awesome!

Are you aware you are digging up a holy cat burial site? There appears to be a huge Cat ghost head coming up to lick you to death for disturbing the kitty souls ;)

Love it!!! Guess that means all the bricks are moved now? Or is this in a different spot?

There's still quite a few concrete blocks edging the sod that we're not removing right now....maybe 75 or so. Just couldn't face prying them out right now when it wasn't part of the landscaping plan.

I have to say, this is an extremely useful and relevant post for me.

I have an area, about 20 ft by 4 feet of grass and some other minor plants I want to remove and make a garden bed. I think we were just going to rototill it. Good plan?

I think if we got a tractor, it would scoff at our wimpy little patch of grass.

I think rototilling would work for an area that size. I certainly wouldn't recommend trying to remove the sod by hand. Very hard work. The tractor has helped tremendously.

i love that last picture on your cat's reflection, cant wait to see the final result. is it expensive to design, landscape your garden. here, it cost a fortune, but i am absolutely sure it will turn up perfect, knowing how TALENTED you are!

Well...it's expensive for our practically non-existent budget anyway. That's why we're doing all the labor ourselves. The gravel for the new parking area cost $345...not what I want to spend money on!

Driving the tractor, alone, would make the whole thing worth it.
