Revelation

I think I've (finally) figured out why I dislike gardening. One goes to an immense amount of work and then has to wait years for it to fill in and look good.

With decorating, one gets instant gratification. Paint a room, it instantly looks better. Re-arrange furniture....same thing. The work immediately pays off.

Check back in a couple years to see if the landscaping has matured to a point where it looks like it should...

Yeah, the first few years of a perennial garden tend to be a bit sparse. Supplement with some annuals for a time- I guess the trick is finding ones the deer won't eat.

Go buy yourself some pretty cut flowers! That might help with the desire for some immediate gratification :)

So true. Then when it has matured, there is the weeding...sweating, the nail breaking, the poison ivy. I would love it if there were no weeds.

I keep telling you, it looks great now..I think each phase has its beauty..Even my weeds..

I think gardens are so much more beautiful for the wait. I always get more satisfaction out of one I've grown myself than when I buy cut plants.

You could always photoshop some more established plants into your photos in the meantime...if that helps.

It's all about gettin' down 'n' dirty with nature anyways. It's the journey. Enjoy the journey :)

You'd be surprised at how full things will look in a couple of years... and how quickly those years will fly by! It's the endless weeding and the cute bunnies eating all my new flowers that drives me crazy!

lol! I am convinced this is the reason people buy colored mulch, so it looks like there is something there. lol. Hey a few potted flowers could add color in a "for now" type of way but really it looks 1000% better than the before pictures!

Ha Ha! This post made me laugh - I am with you 100 percent! Lucky for me when I moved in with my husband he had already lived here for several years and it was done.

Ditto Michelle and fill in the blank spots with some annuals.

The worse part is not waiting for it to fill in but all the weeds that will crop up while you wait! My own garden needs a good weeding. UGH

Any recommendations on deer and rabbit resistant annuals?

I agree 100%. It DOES take awhile for everything to fill in instead of a bunch of straggle shrubs.
BUT once it does start to spread and fill in, it will be amazing and you iwll be thrilled with the results!

Diva, your perennials will look so much different next year! As far as annuals that our deer and rabbits won't eat, if you find any let me know :)

Hahaha..check out in the next year years? What about an 'instant' garden, over here, we can have them all matured and planted, grass, trees. flowers everything...just have to pay much more. I know what you mean, it took us 3 years to get what we want and hubby is currently in a 'gardening' mood, so there's lots of changing and re-planting :)

haha, understandable. But it's a lot of fun to watch the plants grow and grow.

I know - it's frustrating, isn't it. It will pay off down the road though!
