Organizing

I'm collecting costume jewelry for a Christmas tree I plan on donating to next year's Hospice auction. I recently purchased quite a bit from The Iguana Productions and needed to find a way to better organize my cache.

A few years ago, I scavenged some doors from a cabinet shop. Evidently they were ordered incorrectly so they were destined for the wood chipper. My plan was to make signs or chalkboards out of them. (Cabinet doors are very handy for these projects as they are, essentially, already framed.) I still had a few in storage waiting for inspiration to strike. When I told Mark I wanted to make a (cute) peg rack to hang the jewelry from, he suggested the cabinet doors.

I'm big on re-purposing items so this sounded great to me. These long, skinny doors were the perfect size to hang on the wall behind my office door.

We measured and marked out where I wanted the 'pegs', then added the screws. I hot glued chunks of turquoise to the screw heads to keep the jewelry from slipping off the pegs. (My original idea was vintage buttons, but I didn't have enough on hand.)

The racks work really well and by using items I already had, cost practically nothing to make!

The red and the turquoise set on the gold/green is stunning. Combine that with your pretty baubles and ingenuity and it becomes brilliant!

Too strange Sister...well what I say is great minds think alike...

Since I took the old door to Sisters', everyone wants to buy it, so my scouts are out in full force looking for old doors. I like the idea of the stones on the tips of the screws. I have a jar full of square-head nails, if I can just find them in my heap(s)...thought they'd be cute too to hang on.

For free-standing, I just used 4 old shelf brackets, two on each side of the bottom to hold the door upright.

Don't we just amaze us...LOL...

I love costume jewellery. I used to use pieces of broken ones to make hanging glass lanterns. I also used vintage glass. It was so much fun. At the end I made a chandelier out of brooches and beads. It was sooo gorgeous. Now it's in a box waiting for me to have a proper place to put it.

I'm really curious as to what you're planning.

You are so great at repurposing, I am truly inspired learning about all these little items strewn about your house that were slated for landfills only to end up as gorgeous, functional pieces! Gotta admit, the turquoise looks great on the pegs...at first I thought maybe it was patina on metal pegs that Mark created :)
