Snow

Saturday, we drove to the valley for belated Christmas festivities.

This is what the highway pass looked liked as we inched our way slowly over the mountain. Pretty, but I'd rather not have to drive roads like this...

After two weeks of snow and ice, we were expecting to see this when we arrived in Mt. Angel, Mark's hometown.

(These last two photos were borrowed, with permission, from Sheila of Halo Hill.)

St. Mary's
(We were married in this beautiful church)

Happily, by the time we arrived, warm temperatures had moved in so the snow was almost gone. We drove home on wet, (but not snowy!) roads.

To all the people who live in snowy places whether it's North Dakota or Siberia....my hat is off to you. Two weeks of constant snow was more than I ever want to experience again!

All that snow will make for a fabulous Spring - lots of wildflowers and extra greenery in meadows and on the hillsides - all the more wonderful for taking your beautiful photographs!

Beautiful photos Charmaine. I've been enjoying seeing pictures of this Portland storm on a few blogs this past week.

I really am running out of superlatives - don't know where I can pick up some more, do you?

That snow must have given you cabin fever; you didn't brave it did you? Close quarters with family for two weeks, and a long car ride!!! I would have been afraid to drive on those streets. You should get a medal.

Snow, beautiful snow! All we get in NC is the occasional ice storm with it's accompanying misery. Your snow is beautiful, even more so because it was short-lived. :-)

Beautiful shot of the trees, btw.

Happy New Year!

It still makes for pretty pictures though :) Do you get a lot more snow in the high desert? I've heard Portland area is not bad so it must be a kind of culture shock huh? Well all I will say is don't move to Boston lol. Although, it was 65 yesterday & almost all of the 24" we got has melted away like its April or something. Of course more is predicted for Wednesday...ugh.

I was raised in a town about 10 miles south of Portland. This snowstorm was the worst we've had in 30 years. Portland is used to rain, not snow. The city doesn't have enough snow equipment to take care of it...but the really bad thing is the ice. It snows, then ices over. Walking is impossible, let alone driving.

The High Desert of Central Oregon, on the other hand, gets lots of snow, but it's powdery and not icy (usually). Big difference.

Portland (the entire Willamette Valley actually) was a mess.

Dave King-

Maybe a superlative website needs to be created. One we could all click into when we run out of descriptive phrases...

I grew up in the High desert of Wyoming where the winters are training for survival in every way- LONG- sideways winters- the pacific northwest winter this year has been lovely and heavenly- though some don't know how to drive in the snow and ice...I guess it's all about perspective isn't it- and this was all wonderful for me! Your photos are superlatives!!!

I would be sick of it too. But the pictures you posted are so beautiful.

A superlative for your photos - how about 'snowperlative'!

Love your blog - my first visit of many!

Pretty pictures...I love the church. It's amazing how fast it can change. I feel like I live in somewhere like Siberia...but oddly enough...after so much early snow...we are back to green grass today?! Odd weather.

I hear ya on the snow. I expect we'll get more here in Omaha, NE between now and springtime. It's been in the 40's and 50's the last few days though. It would be nice if that would stick around.

Maybe there is something to this global warming, I'm likin' it if I get weather like this in December!!!

Loved all the photos, but have to say that the last one (the church one) is a beauty (and spooky, too).

Greetings from London.

Greetings from Virginia!

Beautiful pics! They almost make driving in the snow look like fun! (Which of course it isn't... I'd have been holding my breath, clenching my teeth and saying a prayer the whole time!)

I understand that the snow was a hassle, but the pictures are wonderful.

BTW -- It was almost 70 in Cincinnati on Saturday. Weird, weird...
